(AFIAP ) Artist award from the International Federation of Photographic Art
13th June 2011
Recently I attended Irish National Print and Projected Images finals. Over the last year, I have become familiar with the work of many excellent Irish photographers, whose images win awards all over the world. It was no surprise to see these images in the mix again in a national competition.

For myself, I was very happy to win an Irish Photographic Federation Silver medal on the day. Also, for continued success in international photographic competitions I was awarded the AFIAP distinction.

One of the judges on the day happened to be the Director of FIAP Distinctions Freddy Van Gilbergen EFIAP, who presented me with this award.

Entering competitions is a good way to get your images out there. If you do well in FIAP or PSA sponsored salons there is a high chance one of your images will appear in the printed exhibition catalogue or better still, be printed and framed as part of a print exhibition that many organisers undertake.

Recently, I was informed by the organisers of one of these exhibitions in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, that all 4 of the images I entered were being considered for awards. Winning images were chosen a few weeks later at the opening of the print exhibition. It was a huge pleasure to be told that 3 of my images had won individual awards and that I would also be receiving an overall award for the best set of 4 images.

So, 2011 is proving to be a very fruitful year. My images continue to win awards and be exhibited all over the world.
Photographic Highlights 2010
13th January 2011
2010 has been a very fruitful year. My main photographic goal was to get an Associateship Distinction which I have described here. Back in March, I entered my first FIAP salon in Bristol after becomming aware of the International Federation of Photographic Art.

FIAP offer distinctions based on continued success in salons. The first 2 are:

Artist (AFIAP): 30 acceptances in 10 salons with 10 different images in 5 countries.
Excellence (EFIAP): 150 acceptances in 30 salons with 50 images in 15 countries.

The full FIAP document setting out all criteria can be found here.

I was really happy to pick up 2 awards in my first salon in Bristol with 3 out of 4 images accepted for the exhibition. Inspired by that initial success, I entered 10 salons over the next few months and reached the criteria to be able to apply for AFIAP.

Inspired again by this success and with a high acceptance rate, I entered a few more with EFIAP in mind. I am really happy that at the end of 2010, I have had 187 acceptances with 49 images. Along the way I picked up 16 awards with 8 images.

There are 2 more awards not highlighted here. One is for a gannet in flight that received a Highly Commended Medal in Swansea. Maybe at a later date I will introduce a Nature gallery on this site, but for now it will continue to showcase my landscape photography. The other award was initially a PSA Ribbon for Wreck of the Sunbeam 2, but I was later informed that under FIAP rules, one author cannot win 2 awards in the same category. Because I had also won a FIAP Silver Medal, I wouldn't be receiving the PSA Ribbon.

Last but certainly not least, it was a huge honour to have one of my images chosen to be published in THIS high quality photography book.
International Federation of Photographic Art
08th August 2010
Earlier this year, I discovered the FIAP (Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique).

This is a federation which affiliates as operational members, the national associations of photography across the world. Camera clubs belonging to a national photographic association can apply to FIAP for patronage to host an exhibition (called a salon). FIAP patronage for a salon requires the host club to conform to very strict rules ensuring a certain standard of quality.

All Photographers from around the world are invited to submit images to a salon. These are then judged by a panel experienced and highly accredited photographers from the host nation plus international judges. A top percentage of images are selected for exhibition. Medals are presented to the top images and *Ribbons* or *Honourable Mentions* to other high scoring images.

So far this year, I have achieved 30 acceptances in 9 salons with 13 images. Three of these images have won awards. “Rossbeigh” and “Wreck of the Sunbeam” both received honourable mentions in the 64th Bristol International Salon. “Castlefreke 1” received a Photographic Society of Malaysia bronze medal in the 29th Malaysian International Salon.

As a photographer, it certainly is satisfying to have my work selected for exhibitions around the world. Every participant in a salon receives a printed catalogue showing winning images and acceptances.

FIAP offers distinctions based on continued success in salons. Accreditations are world wide. Achieving one is recognition that your work stands up against photographers across the world.

I plan to continue entering my best new work to salons. Hopefully there will be more medals in the future…
